McPherson County was organized in 1870 and named after Major-General James B. McPherson, the highest ranking Union officer to die on the battlefield during the Civil War. McPherson County population is approximately 29,554 and the town of McPherson is the county seat. McPherson County is one of the best wheat producing counties in the state. There is a lot of history and pride in the communities. Visit the McPherson County Old Mill Museum with varied exhibits covering lives of pioneers from 1870's to the 1920's. This includes a restored 1898 flour mill will visitors can learn how to mill Kansas wheat into flour. Other exhibits include the Union Pacific Depot and locomotive, the 1904 Swedish Pavilion, built for the 1903 St. Louis World's Fair, at 1903 West Kentuck one-room school and Bethany Academy. Visit a general store, bank, ladies shop and livery. Or, enjoy a picnic next to the Smokey Hill River or camp overnight.

The McPherson Opera House, built in 1888 is currently being restored and will be "a historically significant gathering place for culture, entertainment and education opportunities. Performances are slated to begin sometime in 2009.
