Montgomery County was organized in 1869. Named after General Richard Montgomery. Born in Ireland, Montgomery was an officer in the British Army, but resigned and settled in New York in 1773. He was appointed 1 of 8 generals of the revolutionary army in 1775. He was killed in the attach on Quebec in Dec of 1775, shouting, "Death or Liberty".

Montgomery County population is estimated at 36,252 and the county seat is Independence. The county offers small town living, affordable housing, low cost land, 2 community colleges, 2 area lakes and low crime rates. Historical attractions include Coffeyville's Brown Mansion. It was built in 1904 with 3-stories, 16 rooms and was ahead of its time with an alarm system, elevator and walk-in ice box. The mansion is open for tours and is also available for private parties. The Dalton Defender's Museum is also located in Coffeyville and honors the Defenders who killed 4 members of the Dalton Gang as they were leaving the bank.
