Elk County, named for the Elk River that runs through it was founded in 1875. The county seat is Howard and the as of 2001 the population was 3,189. Nicknamed, "the Kansas Ozarks" because of the beautiful big valleys and small canyons that the various waterways have formed. Farming, ranching, gas & oil production are important to the local economy.
