Pretty Prairie, a community directly west of Wichita, KS, was established in 1872.  The current population is 600 people.  Located in south central Reno County, Pretty Prairie is only 20 miles from Hutchinson, and 40 minutes from Wichita.  With this location it gives the residents of Pretty Prairie the luxury of a small town lifestyle yet big city opportunities and jobs.  There are three hospitals within 30 minutes that include Kingman Community Hospital, Hutchinson Hospital, and Harper Hospital District 5 which provide many healthcare jobs. 

Pretty Prairie is known for its beautiful prairie.  Mary Collingwood came in 1872 with her family and arrived on this flat ground.  She stood on top of a small hill and said, “my what a pretty prairie.”  That is how the name became Pretty Prairie.  Still today it is known for its beautiful wheat crops and farm ground.  Pretty Prairie is also known for its rodeo, The Kansas Largest Night Rodeo.  It is held annually in July for four nights. 

Pretty Prairie also has a wide variety of entertainment and businesses.  There is an elementary school, middle school, and high school all located in the city limits.  The Prairie Sunset Home is a nursing home available for the elderly and those who can’t live independently.   The Links, Pretty Prairie’s golf course, has nine holes and grass greens.  There are also the Civic Theatre where old movies are shown, J & S Hardware Store, The Citizens Bank of Kansas, the Public Library, the Pretty Prairie Steakhouse, Prairie Crossing Bed & Breakfast, 5 churches nearby, a Post Office, and a gas station and auto repair shop.  Pretty Prairie also has the luxury of being only 7 miles from Cheney Lake.  This allows for even more fun with lake activities.
